Oral thrush, also known as oropharyngeal candidiasis, is a yeast infection that affects the tongue and lining of the mouth.

Oral thrush is caused by the overgrowth of a fungus called Candida albicans. A small amount of this fungus is usually found in the mouth. However, when our immune system is weak, this fungus tend to overgrow and become out of control leading to oral thrush.

A major symptom of oral thrush is a white velvety lesion or coating on the tongue and inner cheeks that could eventually spread to the gum, tonsils, and roof of the mouth if not treated timely.

Other symptoms of oral thrush include; soreness, loss of taste, redness, difficulty in swallowing, and bleeding when you brush your teeth or scrape the sores.

People most susceptible to oral thrush include;

  • people in poor health.
  • people taking steroid medicine including some inhalers for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma.
  • people undergoing chemotherapy or other treatments that weaken the immune system.
  • infants and the elderly.

  • people with poorly-fitted dentures.
  • people living with HIV/AIDS.
  • people with diabetes mellitus with high blood sugar levels. Some of these sugars are found in the saliva and serve as food for candida.

If oral thrush is not treated timely and properly, it could lead to complications that could affect your brain (meningitis), eyes (endophthalmitis), heart (endocarditis), esophagus (esophagitis), and joint (arthritis).

Here are tips and good practices, to consider, when dealing with oral thrush;

  • Ensure you maintain an optimal oral hygiene. Brush twice a day, floss daily and avoid sharing your toothbrush.
