Uterine fibroids, also called uterine leiomyomas, are typically non-cancerous tumors that grow in the uterus (womb) of a woman. Fibroid is quite rampant in middle-aged and elderly women as up to 80% of women develop fibroids by the age of 50. Furthermore, about 1 in 5 women have fibroids during their childbearing age.

Fibroids are uncommon in women that are under 20 years of age. Furthermore, fibroids are more common in African-American women than in Hispanic or Asian women.

Although it is possible for just one fibroid to develop, in most cases, there is more than one tumor. Being obese may make fibroids more difficult to detect.

The exact cause of uterine fibroids is unknown. However, some factors tend to increase the likelihood of developing fibroids. These factors include; genetics (hereditary), hormones, and abnormalities in the vascular system.

Uterine fibroids could be so tiny that you would need a microscope to see them. They could also grow very large and weigh a couple of pounds.

Uterine fibroids could develop;

  • on a long stalk on the outside or inside of the uterus (pedunculated)
  • just outside the lining of the uterus (subserosal)
  • just under the surface of the lining of the uterus (submucosal)
  • in the muscle wall of the uterus (myometrial)

Some women with fibroid experience no symptoms. However, those that have symptoms could experience any of the following; bleeding between periods, heavy menstrual bleeding, abnormally prolonged periods, urge to urinate often, menstrual cramps, rectal pressure, lower back pain, and pain during intercourse.

In most cases, uterine fibroids are not dangerous but could cause discomfort and complications such as anemia from huge menstrual blood loss. However, in rare cases, fibroids could cause medical complications that can adversely affect pregnancy.

Here are some tips and good practices, to consider, if you are dealing with uterine fibroids;

  • If you smoke, stop it immediately.
  • Endeavor to exercise regularly.
  • Ensure you stay hydrated by drinking an adequate amount of water daily.
  • Ensure you maintain a balanced diet with lots of fruits and vegetables.
