18 Effective Home Remedies For Fever

Fever is a temporary increase in the body’s temperature especially as a response to an illness or a disease.

A child is considered to have a fever when his/her body temperature is 99.5°F (37.5°C), when measured orally, or 99°F (37.2°C) when measured under the arm (axillary).

An adult is considered to have a fever when their body temperature ranges from 99°F to 99.5°F (37.2°C to 37.5°C) depending on the time of the day.

A fever is, more often than not, a symptom of a disease or an illness as a fever tends to occur when the body is fighting an infection such as flu.

As such, almost any infection can cause a fever outbreak. These include; respiratory infections (such as cold, bronchitis, and tuberculosis), urinary tract infection, viral gastroenteritis, and bone infections. Autoimmune or inflammatory disorders, such as arthritis, vasculitis, and ulcerative colitis, could also cause fevers

Additionally, kids may have a low-level fever for about a day or two after some immunizations. Teething may also cause a slight increase in temperature.

Some common symptoms of fever include; sweating, dehydration, headache, weakness, muscle ache, slight shivering, and loss of appetite.

  • Ensure you stay hydrated by drinking a lot of fluids such as water, popsicles, and soup.
  • Avoid using cold baths, ice or alcohol rubs as this may worsen the situation by causing shivering.
  • In as much as eating is fine, do not force food as this may cause nausea and vomiting.
  • Avoid smoking and the consumption of alcoholic beverages.
  • Try to keep the room temperature comfortable i.e not too cold nor too hot.
  • Have a lot of quality rest and sleep as this would help hasten the recovery time.
  • Do not cover up a person with fever as this may exacerbate the fever.
  • Remove excessive clothing or blankets.

1. Apple Cider Vinegar


An effective way to deal with fever is to use apple cider vinegar. It is acidic in nature which helps in drawing out heat from the body in a natural way. Furthermore, ACV is loaded with essential minerals that replenish the lost minerals during a fever.

For this remedy, take a glass of water and add 2 tsp of ACV in it. Also, add some honey and mix well. Consume it 2-3 times in a day to reduce fever. Another way to use ACV is to mix one part of it with 2 parts of water. Soak a washcloth in it and wring out the excess fluid. Then, place the moist cloth on your forehead and replace it with another soaked cloth as soon as it becomes warm. Also, apply this moist cloth on the sole of your feet and on your abdomen.

In a cup of hot milk, add half a teaspoon of powdered turmeric and a quarter teaspoon of powdered black pepper. Stir the milk and consume it two times a day.

4. Cool Water


Cool water is another simple and inexpensive way to bring down the body’s temperature and relieve fever. Take some cool tap water in a bowl and soak a cloth in it. Wring out the excess water from the cloth and place this cloth on your forehead as well as sponge your hands, feet, armpits and groin area with cool water.

5. Egg White


Egg white may greatly help in reducing fever. It absorbs heat and draws it towards the feet from the head. Therefore, there is minimal damage to your body. Take 2-3 egg whites and beat it for a minute. Then, soak a piece of cloth or paper towel in it and place it on the soles of your feet. Now wear your socks to secure it in place for some time. 6. Raisins

These phenolic compounds also act as great antioxidizing agents. Simply take 20-25 raisins and soak it in half cup of water. When they become soft, crush them and strain the liquid. 7. Warm Water Bath


A warm water bath may prove to be effective in reducing fever. It helps in relaxing the body while helping it to cool the body down to some extent. However, avoid taking a cool bath or alcoholic rubs as it may have an intense cooling action which may cause shivering. 9. Blackberry Vinegar


Blackberry vinegar is one of the most effective remedies for fever but takes a few days time to prepare. So, if you experience recurrent fever, you may prepare it in advance to fight the condition.

Take 1-2 pounds of blackberries and pour apple cider vinegar over it. Store in a jar with a cover and place it in a cool and dark place for at least 3 days. Strain the liquid. Then, take two and a half cup of the liquid and add a teaspoon of sugar to it. Bring it to boil and simmer the solution for 5 more minutes. Let it cool and store it in an airtight container. Make sure you place it in a cool place. Consume a teaspoon of it along with water, several times a day, to relieve the fever.

10. Cream Of Tartar


Take one and a half cup of cream of tartar and mix it with half a teaspoon each of honey and lemon juice. Then, add 2 and a half cups of warm water to it and stir well. Consume 4-6 ounces of this tonic at a time to reduce fever.

11. Sandalwood


The cooling effect of sandalwood helps in drawing out heat from the body in an excellent way. Take a half teaspoon of powdered sandalwood in a bowl and add water slowly to obtain a thick paste. Then, spread the paste evenly on your forehead. Make sure you apply a thick coat of it. Reapply a few times in a day to get rid of fever.

12. Garlic


Garlic has a detoxifying action on the body that helps in eliminating toxins from the body and relieving fever. Furthermore, garlic has an antimicrobial action too which fights infections and relieves fever. Add a finely minced garlic clove to 1 cup of hot water. Allow it to steep for 10 minutes. 14. Basil

Oregano is an effective remedy for fever. All you have to do is add a teaspoon of it along with an equal amount of marjoram in boiling water (1 pint) and let it steep for 30 minutes.
