18 Effective Home Remedies For Mouth Ulcers

Having mouth ulcers could be quite the painful experience.  These painful sores or lesions could be caused by various conditions or disorders such as; oral thrush, canker sores, fever blister (herpes simplex), gingivostomatitis, oral cancer or oral lichen planus.

However, a typical mouth ulcer is not usually serious and heals, naturally, within a couple of days.

Common symptoms of mouth ulcers include; pain in the mouth and open sores in the mouth.

  • Minimize stressful situations in your life as stress could trigger mouth ulcers.
  • Monitor what you eat as foods, such as spicy or acidic foods, can trigger mouth ulcers.

Below are natural treatments and home remedies for dealing with mouth ulcers;

1. Baking Soda


Baking soda is highly effective in relieving mouth ulcers. Baking soda has anti-inflammatory properties which help in quickly soothing pain and swelling. It also helps in neutralizing the ulcer acids and killing germs. For this remedy, make a paste by mixing baking soda with a little amount of water. Then, apply the paste to the ulcer with the help of a Q-tip a few times every day until the ulcer cures. Baking soda may cause a slight burning sensation when applied.

2. Numbing Oil Mixture


A homemade numbing spray using essential oils would reduce the pain almost instantly while relieving the ulcers in a natural way. Eucalyptus oil and peppermint oil are anti-inflammatory as well as antimicrobial in nature which helps in dealing with the mouth ulcer condition in an effective manner. These essential oils also have an astringent action that aids in tightening the surrounding tissues around the ulcers.

Fill a glass bottle with about 2 tbsp of olive oil. You may use grapeseed oil in place of olive oil. Now add 8-10 drops, each, of eucalyptus and peppermint oil and mix well. Apply this oil mixture directly to the ulcer several times daily.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar


Apple cider vinegar is acidic in nature which would assist in killing any germ responsible for mouth ulcers. ACV also has a healing effect which makes it a great remedy for mouth ulcers. Mix a tablespoon of ACV in half a cup of water. Use this solution to rinse your mouth. Do this remedy twice daily.

4. Toothpaste


Using a toothpaste to treat mouth ulcers may seem weird but it works. This is because most kinds of toothpaste are formulated to have an antimicrobial action on your oral cavity.  Dab some toothpaste directly on your mouth ulcers with the help of a cotton swab. Leave it on for a few minutes and rinse your mouth with plain water.

5. Hydrogen Peroxide – Sea Salt Solution


Hydrogen peroxide is a disinfectant and may help in preventing and curing infections. Its anti-inflammatory action reduces pain and swelling in an incredible way. Sea salt also has similar characteristics. Therefore, when mixed together, hydrogen peroxide and sea salt would help in effectively treating mouth ulcers.

Mix equal parts of hydrogen peroxide (3%) and sea salt. Add it to a glassful of warm water. Use this to rinse your mouth twice every day. Do not swallow it as hydrogen peroxide can be harmful if ingested.

Take a little amount of honey on a Q-tip and apply it gently on the mouth ulcers. If the ulcer is caused due to a recent radiation therapy, consider using manuka honey.

7. Turmeric


Turmeric, due to its curcumin constituent, has powerful antiseptic, antimicrobial as well as anti-inflammatory properties that reduce discomfort and promotes healing. Take about 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder in a clean bowl and add water slowly to make a thick paste. With the help of a cotton swab, spread it on the ulcer and leave it for a few minutes. 8. Wax Cap


A homemade wax cap may prevent the mouth ulcer from rubbing against your teeth and braces. Take 1 tbsp of beeswax and mix it with 2 tsp of coconut oil. Warm it a little so that the ingredients melt and mix properly. Slightly cool it and add a little of it at the edge of your braces or tooth where the ulcer is touching. This homemade wax cap would also promote healing.

9. Cayenne Pepper


The chemical compound capsaicin, present in cayenne pepper, is known to inhibit pain by numbing pain receptors. Take powdered cayenne pepper in a bowl and slowly add warm water to make a thick paste. Dip a cotton swab in it and apply it to the ulcer. Do this two to three times every day until the ulcer heals.

10. Cabbage Juice


Cabbage has an anti-inflammatory action on the body which helps in significantly reducing pain and swelling. All you have to do is put a cabbage in enough water and boil it until the water reduces to half of its original quantity. Strain and drink it  3-4 times daily to relieve the mouth ulcer condition.

11. Garlic


Garlic, due to its allicin constituent, has potent antimicrobial properties, which may aid in effectively dealing with mouth ulcers. Slice a garlic clove. Then, gently press it against the ulcer for a couple of minutes so that its juice reaches the affected area. Wash your mouth using plain water after 30-40 minutes. 12. Ice

13. Clove Oil

Add 1 tsp of coriander seeds to a cup of water and boil it for a few minutes. Remove from heat and strain it. When cool, use this solution to rinse your mouth. Coriander seeds have been used for many years to relieve mouth ulcers. Its healing properties reduce pain and discomfort and cure the infection in a natural and effective way. Repeat this remedy 3-4 times daily until you see an improvement.
