Are you having a weird feeling in your ears? Does it feel like there is excess pressure in your ear? Are you having a sensation of muffled sound? Then, you probably have ear congestion which is also known as clogged ear.

Clogged ear can affect people of all ages. However, it is more prevalent in children.

Clogged ears could be quite annoying as it tends to temporarily diminish one’s hearing capacity. Clogged ears could also be somewhat painful.

Common symptoms of clogged ear include; a reduced hearing ability, a windy sensation and sound inside your ear, a sensation of liquid being in your ear, and a popping sensation in your ear.

Factors that could cause clogged or congested ear include; pressure difference in the middle ear, change in altitude (especially when in an airplane), wax accumulation, water accumulation in the ear,  cold or sinus issues, and airflow blockage to the eustachian tube.

Below are various ways to get rid of clogged ear (ear congestion);

1. Lie Down On Your Side


If your ear is clogged with water, put a pillow under your head and lie down on one side. Now change your side and lie down with your affected ear resting on the pillow. Stay for half an hour in this position, so that the deposited water may drain out on its own.

2. Hydrogen Peroxide


Hydrogen peroxide is readily available in most households as it has many uses. Simply pour a little amount of 3% hydrogen peroxide with the help of a clean and dry dropper. Now put it in your affected ear. It will fizz in your ears. Wait until you stop hearing the fizz and drain the solution out of your ear.

3. Olive Oil


Olive oil will dislodge the impurities present in your ears and help in draining it out easily. Warm a little olive oil and use a dropper to put some drops of it in the affected ear. Let the oil stay for 8-10 minutes and drain the oil along with the dissolved wax and impurities out of your ear.

4. Glycerin


Glycerin would help in reducing congestion due to the accumulation of water in your ears. Put a little glycerin in water and drop it down in the affected ear. Let it stay for 10 minutes and drain it out of your ear.

5. Valsalva Maneuver


Valsalva Maneuver is an effective technique to relieve a clogged ear and associated pain. Start by closing your mouth. Now pinch your nostrils with your fingers to close them. Try to blow a little amount of air through the closed nostrils. A slight popping sound can be heard in your ears. This is because the Eustachian tubes open up and relieve pain. Make sure you do not blow too hard as it may damage your ears. Just a little pressure will work well in opening a clogged ear.

6. Tea Tree Oil


Being a strong anti-inflammatory and antibiotic agent, tea tree oil is extremely potent in reducing clogged ear pain. Put a little amount tea tree oil in boiling water. Mix well and tilt your head over the steam coming out of the boiling water so that it reaches your affected ear. The steam will loosen the ear congestion within a few minutes and unclog your ears.

7. ACV And Rubbing Alcohol


Apple cider vinegar and rubbing alcohol can relieve ear pain arising due to an infection. This solution kills the bacteria and cleans the ears to relieve pain and discomfort. Simply mix apple cider vinegar with equal parts of alcohol. Lie down on your side with the clogged ear on top. With the help of a dropper, add a little of this solution in your ear. Place a cotton to keep the solution from spilling out. Let it stay for at least 10 minutes. Finally, use an earbud to remove the wax and impurities. Avoid this remedy if sores are present in your ears.

8. Yawning


Yawning can be an easy yet effective way to open up clogged ears. Yawning helps in regulating the pressure of air in the ears and relieves the muscles of Eustachian tubes. It significantly reduces pain. For this remedy, slightly open your mouth and try to yawn. You will hear a popping sound in your ears. Repeat yawning until you hear the popping sound and the pain is relieved.

9. Chewing Gum


Chewing a gum would also regulate the air pressure in the ear. It is effective when the ear pain is due to a sudden change in air pressure, for example, takeoff or landing while you are inside an airplane. Chewing a gum relieves excessive pressure from the ears and open up clogged ears.

10. Ear Wash


Ear wash, with warm water, is a simple remedy which may help in flushing out the wax and other impurities and opens up a clogged ear. All you have to do is warm up a cup of water and fill an ear syringe with it. Now, tilt your head and pull your earlobe. Insert the syringe lightly in the opening of the ear. Make sure it is pointing slightly up as well as sideways. Push the bulb gently to allow the water to enter your ear canal. Wait for 10 minutes and tilt your head on the other side to allow the water to drain out.

11. Sweet Oil


Sweet oil helps in cleaning the ear and removes wax in an effective way. Take some sweet oil in a dropper and put it in the clogged ear. Lie down on your side and let it stay for some time. Then, tilt your head to drain the oil completely.

12. Hop On One Foot


If you have an ear pain due to trapped fluids which is common after swimming, hopping on one foot may help in equalizing the air pressure in your ear. Stand on one foot and tilt your head towards the clogged ear. Keep standing while maintaining your balance for a few more minutes. In the process of maintaining your balance, you would find yourself hopping. This remedy would help in relieving the clogged ear naturally.

13. Use Otovent


Filling air in a balloon through one of your nostrils may help in regulating the air pressure in ears. Simply block your left nostril with your finger and place a balloon in the right nostril. Now inhale air through your mouth, close your mouth and exhale through your right nostril to inflate the balloon. Now repeat it with the other nostril and you are done.

14. Garlic Oil


Garlic oil has powerful antibacterial and antifungal properties that make it a potent remedy for ear infections. Take 2 garlic cloves and smash it. Put it in a tablespoon of olive oil and heat it. Allow it to cool and put a little amount of this oil in your ear. Drain it out of your ear after a few minutes.

15. Gargle


Mix a teaspoon of salt in a glassful of warm water. Use this solution to gargle for half a minute to relieve the pressure in ears. Repeat the process if the problem persists. It is also helpful in relieving a nasal congestion which may be causing pain in ears.

16. Homemade Nasal Decongestant


Nasal decongestants can simultaneously be used to relieve blocked nostrils as well as clogged or blocked ears. To make a homemade nasal decongestant; to a cup of boiling water add half a teaspoon of baking soda. Now add half a teaspoon of non-iodized salt. While keeping your head tilted, pour the solution into the nostril using a dropper. Let it decongest your nose which will relieve a clogged ear. Repeat the process with the other nostril.

17. Jaw Wriggle


Wriggle your jaws with your mouth opened to relieve air pressure in your ears in a simple and natural way. Keep wriggling your jaws until you hear the ear-popping sound.

18. Mineral Oil And Warm Water


A solution of mineral oil and warm water would also help in softening the ear wax and reduce blockage and pain. Add a little mineral oil to half a cup of warm water. Put it in your affected ear and keep your head tilted for 10-12 minutes. Then, drain the solution. Repeat this remedy until the problem subsides.

19. Toynbee Maneuver


Toynbee maneuver is yet another easy way to get rid of ear pain. Sip some water and keep it in your mouth. Block your nose by pinching it. At this position, try to swallow the water. This maneuver would unplug your ears and relieve discomfort. Repeat if the problem does not resolve at the first attempt.

20. Warm Compress


If the cause of ear pain is sinus congestion or cold, a warm compress may help in providing a fast relief. Take a bowl of warm water and soak a clean washcloth in it. Remove the excess water by wringing the cloth and place it on your affected ear. Let it stay for 5-10 minutes. You may also apply heat using a hot water bottle.

21. Steam


Steam inhalation is an easy, effective and soothing way to treat ear pain due to cold. This remedy would reduce congestion and relieve the pain almost instantly. Steam will also loosen the deposited mucus as well as ear wax in a gentle way. Fill up a large bowl with hot water and lean over it to inhale the steam coming out of it. Use a towel to cover your head so that the steam does not escape out.

22. Wax Softening Solution


Take a little baby oil and glycerin and add it to hot water. Now add equal parts of hydrogen peroxide and mix well. Put it in your affected ear and you will hear a bubbling sound. Once the sound fades out, drain it. The solution helps in softening the wax that may clog the ears and cause pain.

23. Garlic Compress


This homemade ear compress will unclog ears caused due to infection or sinus. All you have to do is take a few cloves of garlic and boil it with a glassful of water on medium heat for 10-12 minutes. Remove from heat and take out the garlic cloves. Then, crush the cloves and add a little salt to it. Wrap the resultant garlic paste in a thin cloth and hold it over the clogged ear for some time. Repeat this remedy 2-3 times if needed.
